How to connect Claude and other AI assistants to Revit

Revit MCP is a Revit add-in with a built-in MCP server. Install it once and Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Codex, VS Code and other AI assistants can read and edit the Revit model open on your PC.

What you need

What you need

Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) and Revit 2024, 2025, 2026 or 2027. With Revit 2024 alone, also the .NET 8 Desktop Runtime — setup tells you if it is missing.

A Google account (Gmail or a company Google Workspace address) or a GitHub account. No invitation, no token, no administrator rights. Revit MCP is free.

An AI assistant: the Claude app or Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, Gemini CLI or Cline on your PC — or ChatGPT or claude.ai in the browser (see the last step).

1 · Install

Install

  1. Open aecomcps.com/revit and click Download the installer.
  2. Open the downloaded Install-Revit-MCP.cmd. If Windows asks, choose Run (or More info › Run anyway).
  3. Setup checks the PC, downloads the newest version (checksum verified) and asks which Revit versions to set it up for. The ones on this PC are ticked.

The page has a two-minute video of the whole install.

2 · Sign in once

Sign in once

  1. A small Revit MCP – Sign in window opens. Click Sign in with Google or Sign in with GitHub.
  2. Your browser opens that site and the window shows a short code. It is already copied — paste it there, sign in as usual and confirm.
  3. The window says Signed in and closes by itself; setup finishes with SUCCESS.

Your password is only typed on Google's or GitHub's own page. You sign in once per PC. Without signing in, Revit MCP still works; it just does not share with or learn from your team.

3 · Claude and the other assistants connect by themselves

Claude and the other assistants connect by themselves

Setup connects every AI assistant it finds on the PC: Claude Code and the Claude app, Codex, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, Gemini CLI and Cline. An assistant you install later is connected at the next Revit start, or within 10 minutes while Revit is open.

Then restart the assistant — close it completely, open it again and start a new chat. An assistant only sees Revit MCP when it starts. The Claude app keeps running by the clock: quit it there (right-click › Quit) and open it again.

In Claude Code, Revit MCP's read-only tools (reading the model, views, schedules) run without asking each time; tools that change the model still ask. The Claude app asks per tool until you choose Always allow.

Another MCP client, or by hand: revit-mcp.exe --setup show prints the connection details, --setup auto connects every assistant it finds, and --setup cursor (or codex, …) connects one. The program is in %APPDATA%\BIMManager\RevitMcp\bin. On the PC the server answers at http://localhost:48884/mcp.

4 · Start Revit and ask

Start Revit and ask

Start Revit and open a model. Revit MCP is on the Add-Ins tab, panel AI Tools. If Revit asks whether to load it ("the publisher could not be verified"), choose Always Load.

Then ask in plain words, for example:

  • "Which doors on Level 02 have no Fire Rating set?"
  • "Replace Level 1 with L01 in all sheet names." — it shows a before/after preview first and applies it when you agree.
  • "Tag all doors in the active view."

Every change is one Undo step in Revit ("MCP: …"). Keep Revit idle while the assistant works: an open dialog or an active tool makes requests wait (press Esc twice).

5 · From ChatGPT or claude.ai in the browser (optional)

From ChatGPT or claude.ai in the browser (optional)

ChatGPT and claude.ai run in the cloud, so they cannot reach Revit on your PC by themselves. Cloud AI access connects them through the Revit MCP gateway. It is off until you switch it on, per PC.

  1. Answer Yes when setup asks about ChatGPT or claude.ai, or later in Revit: Add-Ins › AI Tools › MCP Server › Switch cloud AI access on.
  2. Add a custom connector with the address https://revit-mcp.pages.dev/mcp/revit — in claude.ai (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise): Settings › Connectors › Add custom connector; in ChatGPT (paid plans): Settings › Apps & Connectors › Advanced settings › Developer mode, then Create.
  3. Sign in with the same Google or GitHub account as on your PC, and keep Revit open.

What the AI reads from the model passes through the gateway, which does not store it, to the AI company.

If the assistant does not see Revit

If the assistant does not see Revit

  • Is Revit running with a model open? The assistant reaches Revit MCP only while Revit runs.
  • Did you restart the assistant after setup connected it?
  • revit-mcp.exe --doctor checks the installation and shows the port in use; when port 48884 is taken, the add-in takes the next free one.
